As a Communication Strategist with the Calgary Police Service (CPS) you will provide strategic communication service and advice to CPS members regarding plans, policy and system development, issue prevention and management, crisis communication and the development, implementation and evaluation of communication strategies. Primary duties include:

Lead and coordinate communications projects involving multiple partners.

Develop/implement proactive communication plans and strategies that address and mitigate current and future issues and trends.

Write, edit and produce a variety of communications materials including news releases, speeches, key messages, newsletters, social media, bulletins and briefing notes.

Monitor CPS media line and coordinate response to media requests.

Prepare media materials, coach spokespersons, organize media events and assist with various other communications projects.

Provide media training and instruct CPS members on current best practices when dealing with media.

Plan and implement special events.
Qualifications

A Degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Business or related discipline with at least 5 years of related experience that includes progressively senior experience in strategic communications and issues/crisis management, including either media relations or journalism experience.

Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite is required.

A designation in APR (Accredited Public Relations), ABC (Accredited Business Communicator) or CAAP (Communications and Advertising Accredited Professional) would be considered an asset.

Previous experience working in a law enforcement environment would be beneficial.

Excellent communication skills, efficiency and thoroughness, focus on results, impact and influence, planning and prioritizing/visionary, relationship building, service orientation.

work week, with 1 week of on-call in an 8 week rotation
