JOB DESCRIPTION

Position: COST ACCOUNTANT

Reports to: Controller

Direct Reports: None.

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Controller, the Cost Accountant will be responsible for all cost analysis, product cost and margin analysis for the manufacturing process. He/she will ensure that the financial information provided in the internal reports are timely and accurate. The Cost Accountant plays a key role in controlling and reducing operational costs.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Perform cost accounting activities covering material, labour, overhead, sales costs, freight costs and other costs
  • Plan, study and collect data to determine the full costs per product type
  • Analyze and determine the standard costs to be implemented in the process of calculating absorption costs and properly recording transactions to the general ledger
  • Review the effectiveness of current analysis systems and work to develop the tools necessary to effectively review costs
  • Be part of the training efforts to management and supervision for the proper monitoring of cost management practices
  • Maintain the analytical accounting system
  • Prepare periodic internal reports maintaining the highest quality, reliability, and accuracy
  • Conduct variance analyses between actual costs and standard costs and provide reports explain these variances
  • Analyze and explain inventory cycle count discrepancies and support cycle counts on all inventoried items
  • Provide management with reports specifying the factors affecting prices and profitability
  • Perform sales analysis by customer/product/region
  • Analyze changes in product design, raw materials, or manufacturing methods to determine cost effects
  • Provide cost estimates for new and proposed products
  • Assist in the month-end closing process
  • Participate in the creation of annual budgets

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or equivalent combination of education and experience

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of experience in a manufacturing environment, cost accounting experience required

Licenses/Certificates:

  • CPA accounting designation or working towards

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proficient with use of ERP systems and ability to pull detail data to support account analysis
  • The ideal candidate will have a well-rounded background in cost accounting, financial analysis, and ERP systems maintenance
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs: Advanced proficiency in Excel
  • Proven problem solving and strong analytical skills with an eye for detail
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work in a cross-functional team environment
  • Assertive, self-motivated and goal oriented

Working Conditions:

This job is performed in an office environment, and generally requires 50% sitting, 25% walking, and 25% standing. Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling may be required from time to time. Frequent computer use, involving visual concentration and significant fine finger dexterity, is also required in this role.

Hours of Work:

  • Monday to Friday (8:30 am – 5:00 pm)
  • 1-hour lunch (unpaid)

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Salary: $70,000.00-$80,000.00 per year
