An exciting and rare opportunity for a Museum Curator, based in the heart of Muskoka, a world class tourist destination

Our non-profit community museum, focused on the early settlement of the district as well as the local boat building industry, is located in the heart of Port Carling and within easy commuting distance of Bracebridge, Gravenhurst and as far as Huntsville.

The Position:

The position of Curator is an exciting long-term opportunity to be the most senior management of the Museum, acting as the ambassador and public face of the Museum. The role involves interfacing with visitors; donors; District and other Tourism bodies and associations; other local museums; the Chamber of Commerce; Township government and schools, clubs and community groups.

The Curator is the steward of our facility and assets, responsible and accountable for all aspects of operations, social media, fund raising, security, safety and cleanliness, and leadership of summer staff, volunteers and members. You will take the lead in implementing our Strategic Plan, its initiatives and selected Best Practices. You will be responsible for ensuring proper business and technical records are maintained in an accessible manner, according to Museum policies.

As Curator, you will be responsible for all aspects of our large, unique and valuable collection of artifacts, including researching, cataloguing and protecting all artifacts. You will be an important member of the Curatorial Committee and lead in the development and rotation of exhibits and the overall effective use of the collection. You will lead in the multi-year process of moving to cutting edge collections software and supervise the work of a curatorial focused summer student.

The Curator partners with other local museums to share information and exchange artifacts as approved; and meet with the public and museum patrons to describe the unique nature and history of the collection. You will develop and maintain collections focused aspects of social media and outreach programs and be responsible for off hours museum events such as an annual fund raiser.

You will work collaboratively and openly with the volunteer Board of Directors, leveraging their diverse skills and perspectives. The enthusiastic Board Directors will serve as mentors in their specialties, help you get up to speed and support you throughout the year. We have significant institutional knowledge available in a central repository for all aspects of Museum operations.

The Curator role is full-time from March through November. You will be responsible for scheduling yourself, staff and volunteers to ensure coverage so that the Museum is open every weekend and holiday in peak season. Some programs are delivered after hours. There are reduced hours through the remaining months of the year, working according to an agreed set of key activities and tasks which may vary yearly. Paid vacation is generous. This role is ideal for a candidate who is self-motivated and enjoys flexibility for some off-season personal interests.

- Strong attention to detail, very strong organizing skills, strong leadership skills, and excellent communication skills

- A leadership style that is open, collaborative, and communicative with Board members, staff and volunteers

- Curious and open to personal growth and development

Technical Qualifications:

- The Curator must be a graduate of a postsecondary Museum Studies Program with some post-graduation experience in a museum setting.

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

- Familiarity with leading museum practices is a must.

- Excellent interpersonal skills as the position requires interaction with the public, student staff, volunteers, and the Board of Directors.

- The Curator requires financial literacy, and the ability to work cooperatively with our external bookkeeper and Treasurer in maintaining and publishing financial information and statements

- Technology literacy in a modern environment is a requirement. Ideal experience would include various Office applications, IT security and specialized applications such as Past Perfect, Shopify. Experience with social media, particularly Facebook, Instagram, WordPress and Canva would be highly desirable. Familiarity and commitment to key technology practices including security, password management and maintaining back-ups is a must.
