Deputy Harbour Master

The role reports to the Director, Director, Marine Operations/Harbour Master. The Deputy Harbour Master is responsible for the oversight and management of Current Operations of the Halifax Port Authority which includes marine and landside operations coordinated through the Port Operations Centre. The Deputy Harbour Master is responsible for manning and operating the Port Ops Centre as well as managing all aspects of operational policy; policies include those impacting overall operations of the Port of Halifax in accordance with the Canada Marine Act, Canada Shipping Act, Marine Transportation and Security Act and regulations and any other regulations binding upon the HPA. Finally, the Deputy Harbour Master is responsible for developing and maintaining a robust and well communicated and understood Emergency, Incident and Crisis Management program at the Halifax Port Authority for the Port of Halifax. The Deputy Harbour Master is delegated the Harbour Master’s functional duties and responsibilities during the Harbour Master’s absence.


The successful candidate must hold a Certificate of Competency as Master Home Trade unlimited as to tonnage or equivalent or a relevant university degree, and/or equivalent experience in Leadership, Management and Command in marine operations, business, public administration, business development, and transportation/logistics combined with a minimum of five (5) to seven (7) years leadership experience in a management or Command role. Must have an excellent command of the English language both spoken and written. Must have good organizational skills and flexibility to perform multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.


This position requires a comprehensive background in marine and/or Port operations, cruise operations combined with knowledge of the marine transportation industry.


The successful candidate must possess excellent leadership, management and interpersonal skills and demonstrate excellent communication, presentation, and planning skills in the performance of responsibilities. Being an innovative and strategic thinker will provide the ability to work effectively in a changing environment. Must have ability to work well in a team environment as well as independently. Must have ability to interface with contacts at all levels including senior level representatives from industry and government to effectively represent the HPA.
