Overview
The NWT SPCA is the largest SPCA in the Northwest Territories and is located in the City of Yellowknife, the capital of the NWT. We are a non-profit society striving to protect and enhance the quality of life for domestic animals in all 33 communities in the NWT and in western Nunavut. Focusing on the health and wellbeing of domestic pets, the NWT SPCA facilitates many lifesaving programs such as Community Spay & Neuter and Animal Wellness Clinics for companion animals, education initiatives, pet food drives, adoptions and dog transfers, to name a few. Our programs improve the welfare of our Northern pets and the communities in which they live.

The NWT SPCA is seeking an Executive Director to oversee the organization’s operations and management. This is an exciting new position that will be vital to facilitate the continued growth of our programs and expansion of our organization.

General Description
The Executive Director is expected to provide a leadership role in the organization and to oversee operations of the NWT SPCA. This position reports to the Board of Directors and has three (3) direct reports: Shelter Manager, Operations Manager, and Bookkeeper. The Executive Director will work closely with the Board of Directors to carry out Board mandates as they relate to administration, fundraising initiatives, public communications, and shelter policy implementation while upholding the organization’s strategic plan. The Executive Director will oversee shelter operations and will be responsible for ensuring a high level of customer service for both internal and external clients which represents the values of the organization.

Salary & Benefit Information
This is a full time indeterminate position at 40 hours per week with three (3) weeks vacation leave.

Working from home may be permitted, however, the Executive Director will be required to be on location at the shelter a minimum of 50% to start, and a minimum of 30% of the time after one year.

Leadership

▪ Build understanding and alignment of the NWT SPCA mission and delivery of strategic goals within the leadership team

▪ Provide a high level of customer service which reflects the values of the organization

▪ Provide coaching and mentorship to the shelter team

▪ Develop opportunities for work-related education, advancement, and growth

▪ Continually challenge the organization’s performance

▪ Maintain knowledge of industry trends and innovation

▪ Manage the organization to attain key performance goals

▪ Ensure the goals and outcomes are consistent with our mission

▪ Assure the shelter is providing the best possible care and treatment for the animals in our care and the people that support them

Administration

▪ Oversee all daily administrative operations

▪ Hire, evaluate, and manage the Shelter Manager, Operations Manager, and Bookkeeper

▪ Develop and assign responsibility for critical performance metrics and measures for each functional area:

Animal Care & Contact

  • Ensure that all program services are provided in an efficient, effective and professional manner
  • Ensure that Board designated priorities, goals, and objectives are achieved at the highest level of quality possible

Fundraising/Communications/Development/Marketing

  • Enhance the organization's fundraising and development capability through annual campaigns, special events, capital campaign programs, cultivation of potential donors, bequests, and special events coordinated with Board efforts
  • Collaborate with Board of Directors on events and campaign planning
  • Assign and/or research grant opportunities and submit applications as appropriate

Finance

  • Oversee the fiscal affairs of the organization to ensure that assets are properly preserved and utilized, and that adequate control and reporting procedures are in place
  • Prepare and direct the budget and financial control program, as approved by the Board of Directors

Operations

  • Supervise and guide the Shelter Manager and Operations Manager to ensure the shelter is operating at optimal levels, including but not limited to, intake, adoptions, and placement, in addition to care, feeding and enrichment of the animals
  • Develop and foster relationships with affiliate organizations in support of specialized programming such as Spay/Neuter Inclusion Program (SNIP) and adoption retention
  • Develop, enforce, and clarify organizational policies and procedures and applicable state and federal law, including safety and permits

Medical

  • Assure that all veterinary assistance is properly licensed
  • Assure medical operations are meeting performance requirements

▪ Ensure compliance with federal, territorial, and municipal legislation and regulations in all functions and operations of the organization

▪ Other related duties and responsibilities as required by the Board

Board Relations

▪ Serve as the liaison between the Board, management, staff, and volunteers

▪ Develop, prepare, and deliver a monthly Board report pack that provides organizational performance assessment reviews and improvement recommendations

▪ Summarize relevant industry, organization, and influencer trends and insights that impact the strategic direction of the shelter

▪ Review and adjust strategy as needed in collaboration with the Board, to fulfill NWT SPCA mission

Qualifications

▪ Bachelor’s Degree and/or 5 years of equivalent work experience

▪ 3 years of executive organizational leadership and personnel management experience

▪ Passionate about the humane treatment and care for animals

▪ Demonstrated public speaking and presentation skills

▪ Proven knowledge of organizational performance management, budgeting, process improvement, trending analysis, and financial analysis

▪ Ability to interpret legislation and regulation and the implications to the organization's operations

▪ Ability to prepare and communicate performance reporting and strategic recommendations
