Primary Function:

ChristianaCare is looking for a full-time Groundskeeper to maintain the grounds of hospital in a clean, safe, and orderly condition for patients, employees, and visitors.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Maintains grounds by performing multiple tasks including: cutting grass, mulching plants, pruning, watering, planting, picking up litter and debris, emptying trash receptacles, sweeping walks, roads, and entryways maintaining a neat appearance.

Drives pickup truck, street sweeper and/or backhoe.

Cleans drains, positions signs, inspects site amenities and performs minor repairs and adjustments on these items as directed.

Cares for tools, keeps equipment clean and serviced and in good working order. This includes checks on oil, fuel, and fluid levels, sharpening and minor adjustments to ensure proper performance of mechanical equipment.

During inclement weather, assists Maintenance crews indoors.

Works on severe weather details, removing snow, de-icing, clearing drains; secures site in high wind conditions.

Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices. Reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.

Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skill and Ability Requirements

Knowledge of basic plant forms to identify weeds from cultured plant material.

Knowledge of proper safety procedures for operating grounds maintenance tools and equipment.

Ability to perform a variety of strenuous tasks associated with grounds maintenance.

Ability to operate a lawn mower, snow blower, pick-up truck, and power sweeper/vacuum as necessary.

Ability to assess equipment breakdowns and take appropriate corrective action.

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with others.

Skill in oral and written communications.

Hours: Day Shift 7:30am - 4:00pm (may require off hour work)

Education and Experience Requirements:

High school graduate or equivalent.

Valid driver's license.

Working Conditions:

• Exposure to extreme heat, cold, dust, dirt, rain, snow, wind, noise, and fumes. Occasional exposure to extended and/or unusual hours. 95% of work performed outdoors.

Physical Demands:

• Frequent lifting, stooping, bending, pushing, pulling. Strenuous work associated with maintaining the grounds.
