Nature of Work
Under general supervision, operates medium and heavy construction and maintenance equipment and large trucks. Performs skilled and semiskilled work in the maintenance, construction and operation of public works, parks, cemeteries, solid waste collection and at transfer station and utilities facilities and programs. Leads work crews of fulltime and temporary employees.
Examples of Work Performed
Perform routine equipment maintenance and repair including; inspect hydraulic lines, check tires, oil, lubricant and water levels, wash interior and exterior; check lights and fuel in trucks or equipment; prepare appropriate work orders related to equipment repair.
Operates graders, semi-trailer trucks, scrapers, dozers, rollers, large front-end loaders, snow plows, sanders, recyclers, boom trucks and similar equipment in various assignments.
Fills, grades and gravel unpaved road and alley surfaces; sweeps sweets; plows snow; maintains streets; repairs potholes; crack-seals paved roads and alleys; forms and ours concrete; places, maintains and removes barricades, signs and other traffic devices; fabricates signs; performs routine welding; paints signs, buildings and facilities; paints traffic markings including center lines, cross walks, parking stalls and no parking areas in streets and parking lots; acts as the lead worker for small groups of full time and temporary employees.
Repairs and installs fences and drainage facilities and structures; repair refuse containers; plants, prunes, cuts, cares for and removes trees; performs work in pest and rodent control.
Operates heavy equipment for composting, grinding plant wastes and operating a solid waste transfer station.
Drive a tractor trailer transfer truck; performs other duties in operation and maintenance of the solid waste transfer station including direct unloading and collect fees.
Maintains and installs water and sewer lines and irrigation systems operations.
Some positions in this class may feed and care for large and small animals at parks exhibits and maintain the animal enclosures, water systems, etc. at the animal exhibits.
Responsible for opening and closing graves; buries and disinters remains.
Responds to after hour calls for service.
Flushes storm drainage areas; mows grass and weeds.
Responsible for completion of operating and time reports; assists on a survey crew; may train other workers.
Performs other work which is consistent with the essential elements of the job.
Desirable Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
- Knowledge of the mechanical operation of diesel and gas powered equipment including loader, semi-trailer truck, sanitation trucks, skid loader, dump trucks and others
- Ability to maintain and make routine repairs to such equipment
- Knowledge of hazards of the work and safety precautions to be taken
- Basic knowledge of animal feeding and care
- Ability to supervise work of others as a lead worker
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, officials and the public
Experience and Training
Any combination of experience and training equivalent to completion of high school and two years’ experience in the operation of light and medium equipment and trucks as a Maintenance Worker II; or similar work. Appropriate trade school or training is desirable.
Special Requirements
Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License as required by the State of Nebraska. Some positions of this class may require possession of a pesticide applicators license as required by the State of Nebraska. Some positions in this classification may require certification for waste screening at municipal solid waste management facilities.
