The Youth Housing Navigator is responsible for supporting youth enrolled in the Youth Housing Program, an extension of the Home Base Yellowknife program. The YHP program is designed to assist youth to become more independent. Youth will be assisted to locate and secure appropriate Community Support Services that are specific to their uniquely identified needs.

This is a full-time, in person position located in Yellowknife, NWT and can not be completed remotely. Applicants from outside Canada cannot be considered at this time.

Responsibilities include:

  • Support the vision, mission and goals of the Home Base Yellowknife program
  • Adhere to the Youth Housing Program model and ensure delivery is professional, maintains a harm reduction, recovery and youth oriented approach.
  • Recommend changes to improve the effectiveness of the Youth Housing Program, including documentation and reporting.
  • Stay apprised of the operations by attending scheduled shifts and emergency shifts as required.
  • Support self-identified goals of program participants by assisting to locate and access appropriate practice and community based services
  • Maintain a dynamic, flexible and collaborative approach to meet individual needs of program participants
  • Maintain an excellent working relationship with participants, families, caregivers, guardians and community support agencies
  • Liaise with community service providers and other professionals to coordinate services and facilitate referrals for housing related needs and goals
  • Attend and complete training opportunities when and as provided and scheduled
  • Monitor the activity of program participants in the Housing Program and respond to any complaints, including contact emergency personnel when and as needed
  • Communicate with rental agency to secure public units and ensure invoicing is accurate
  • Assist youth to communicate and liaise with Income Support as required
  • Any other duties as directed by the Program Manager

Crisis Management

  • Recognize potential emergency situations and intervene when necessary, including contacting emergency personnel
  • Remain situationally aware of the work environment, assessing various situations to mitigate risk
  • Ensure breaches of safety and security are identified and the appropriate intervention is applied
  • Assist youth to complete safety plans when appropriate
  • Complete suicide risk assessments and implement response appropriate to the situation
  • Asist youth to develop strategies to deal with potentially dangerous situations; i.e., suicidal ideation/threats, suicide plan, active suicideself harm or other behaviours harmful to the youth or other residents of the program
  • Assess and evaluate risk management with the intent to prevent crisis situations when and where ever possible
  • Demonstrate knowledge of de-escalation practices to be employed while on shift including verbal and physical aggression
  • Demonstrated capacity to implement suicide risk assessments, appropriate safety planning and response

Participation in Teamwork

  • Work collaboratively with other staff within in the Home Base Yellowknife Organization to provide support and bridged services
  • Actively participate in team meetings, professional development activities, staff retreats and other activities as provided
  • Work in partnership with other community service and support organizations

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work shift including day, evening and overnight if required
  • Ability to assist youth to move in or out of housing including lifting furnitureCapacity to lift 50+ lbs
  • Cleaning as required
  • Class 5 license with minimum of 1 year driving experienceDriver Assessment will be conducted to ensure safe operation of fleet vehicles

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 19 yrs of age
  • College or University education in the areas of Education, Social Work, Human Services, Recreation or PhysEd
  • Equivalencies/life experience may be considered on an individual basis
  • Minimum of one year of relevant or related work experience
  • Experience working with youth who are experiencing mental health challenges, addictions, homelessness and trauma would be an asset
  • Full Class 5 driver's license, minimum of 1yr driving experience
  • Clear Driver Abstract
  • Clear Criminal Record with Vulnerable Sector check
  • Clear Child Protection record check
  • VISA status to work in Canada

Must have

  • Evening & weekend availability
  • Strong communication skills
  • Confidence in a crisis or emergency situation
  • Enhanced computer skills, Google Suite in particular

Must be

  • Punctual & reliable as working various shifts
  • Strong social skills & emotional intelligence
  • Highly adaptable, organized & able to multitask
