The Williamsport Area School District is accepting applications for an anticipated Part Time Library Aide position based at Williamsport Area High School; subject to the determination of the Superintendent for the 2023-24 School Year. This is a 5 hour, 185 day position, based on school year calendar, and is subject to the minimum requirements listed on the Job Description below which include, but are not limited to, a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. A minimum of a high school diploma (or equivalent) is required. Post-Secondary work toward a degree is preferred. Verifiable knowledge of and experience with Destiny Software is preferred. Qualifications for this position shall be based upon applicable verified work experience, verified educational/training/credentials and the District’s defined qualifications for the position. Ability to receive a passing score on a job-specific skills assessment may be required. Qualifications for this position are defined solely by the District which: for internal candidates, includes an employee’s work attendance, disciplinary history, credentials and other job specific qualifications. JOB DESCRIPTION - Library Aide
Basic Functions:
This position is clerical/instructional support position which is responsible for organizing library books, supplies, equipment and material and providing support services for students utilizing library services. This position requires a knowledge of library procedures and practices and the ability to communicate this information to students and staff.
Education & Experience:
This position requires a minimum of a high school diploma (or equivalent). Post-secondary work toward a degree is preferred. Knowledge of and/or experience with library services is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
This position requires demonstrated patience and the ability to relate to students, parents, and teachers in a manner that develops student confidence in benefiting from the educational process. This position requires considerable knowledge of English and spelling. This position requires the ability to explain library procedures to students and staff. This position requires familiarity with computer and software applications in a library setting. This position requires the ability to understand and adjust to changes in the educational environment.
Authority & Responsibilities: [(E) Designates Essential Functions]
- Provides general library information to students and faculty regarding the location and/or use of any library services. (E)
- Checks out, renews, or checks in books for library patrons and prepares overdue notices. (E)
- Computes library circulation and other statistics, shelves books, searches for and returns missing books and files. (E)
- Prepares and maintains records in the audio-visual area. (E)
- Inputs information into computer files, updates information, and generates reports as necessary. (E)
- Assists the librarian, teachers, and principal in scheduling availability of the library facilities for student use. (E)
- Assists the teaching staff in enforcing library rules and regulations. (E)
- Receives incoming periodicals or materials and files and/or replaces literature. (E)
- Communicates effectively (orally and in writing) with administrators, staff, students and the public. (E)
- Is able to speak and write in a clear and concise manner. (E)
- Operates office equipment, including but not limited to, fax machine, copiers, computers, telephones, intercom systems, etc. (E)
- Maintains confidentiality of all business related information. (E)
- Performs other related functions as directed by the building principal, teacher and/or designee.
Elementary Job-Specific Assignments:
- Checks-in/out/renews books on a daily basis. (E)
- Maintains orderly book shelves. (E)
- Repairs, replaces barcodes, spine labels, etc. as necessary. (E)
- Schedules story times each week. (E)
- Issues overdue notices to students weekly. (E)
- Sends letters to parents/guardians regarding long overdue books. (E)
- Contacts parents/guardians via telephone (as necessary) regarding overdue/damaged books. (E)
- Collects/deposits money for book replacement and fines and submits a report to the DSC. (E)
- Maintains computer files for tracking library usage, patron updates/withdrawals, bibliographies, etc. (E)
- Maintains bulletin boards and hall displays. (E)
- Assists students with research, internet usage, power library, world books on line, and other library resources. (E)
- Assists students with library procedures. (E)
- Maintains Accelerated Reader records: reading level, quiz number and quiz orders. (E)
- Monitors student behaviors in the library. (E)
- Assists teachers with subject preparation as necessary.
Physical Requirements:
MEDIUM: Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Auditory and Visual Requirements:
Within normal ranges with or without correction.
Equipment Used:
Office equipment such as computers, fax machines, telephones, copiers, etc.
