Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) Position (1.0 FTE)
Reports to: EIS Program Director
1. Work collaboratively with the school to ensure that needs of both schools, students and parents are addressed
2. Provide information/referrals to students and families regarding education and community resources
3. Interpretation and translation of documents, meetings, gatherings that pertain to school
4. School staff has increased awareness of newcomer issues
5. Assess and Evaluate needs of students and families in relation to education and in the community
6. Develop rapport with students through regular school visits and activities
7. Design school orientations for newcomer students and parents
8. Design and Coordinate presentations regarding Canadian culture in the Education system (Parent teacher interviews, report cards, graduation, extra-curricular activities at school, etc)
9. Design and coordinate presentations that are relevant to student life (winter weather, job search)
10. Problem solve with schools on behavioral issues that teachers may be coming in contact with
11. Provide culturally appropriate training or access to training for high school students looking for jobs
12. Design and coordinate in collaboration with school staff, programs that will connect parents and families with schools
13. Network with organizations that directly affect students between the ages of 5-18 years (school age)
14. Conduct needs assessments with students and families
15. Refer families when issues are outside of school (CFS, finances, document renewals)
16. Keep up to date client progress notes
17. Complete monthly reports
18. Report at weekly check-ins of the progress of program
19. 1 monthly home visit
20. Assess and Evaluate program on an ongoing basis
21. Produce and distribute SWIS promotional materials
22. Provide cultural background information to school staff as needed
23. Assist school with initiating contact with all newcomer families
24. Participate on committees, workshops and conferences as the school sees fit
25. Provide service in accordance with the policies, guidelines, and protocols of the program and the Hanover and Seine River School Division
26. When you need to work with a student(s) of the opposite gender, always ensure that there are qualified volunteers or staff members present of that same gender.
