Job Summary
This position supports and promotes the health and safety and coordinates and directs the work of employees who oversee the safety and care of all animals at the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park and Zoo,
Duties & Responsibilities
Scope And Major Responsibilities
- Plans, assigns work schedules, supervises, coaches, assesses staffing needs, identifies layoff and recall requirements and participates in the evaluation of the work including attendance management and assisting with progressive discipline and grievance resolution of staff.
- Leads the daily operations of zoo related activities.
- Leads staff training and development to ensure proper care for animals, while maintaining safety of staff, including training for operant conditioning/animal training program for all animals.
- Assists with the preparation of, and monitors the operating and capital budgets for assigned operating and capital programs; including annual reporting of activities and recommends available resources for allocation
- Prepares and evaluates specifications for new zoo exhibits, animal exhibit maintenance and zoo repairs/replacements procuring materials and services as required,
- Provides oversight for the development and implementation of customer service and public engagement processes.
- Represents the zoo and provides support to assigned committees and stakeholders by attending meetings, preparing reports and coordinating projects as they relate to maintaining and monitoring standards of safety, cleanliness and security of the zoo and acts as a liaison with public interest groups and community organizations.
- Reviews and responds to public, councillors, staff, and civic Department concerns by providing policy and procedure information and technical advice regarding assigned operating and capital programs.
- Provides technical advice and project estimations, regarding the future development of the zoo including a collection plan, conservation, education and breeding management plan.
- Prepares comprehensive reports and correspondence related to Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park and Zoo matters, including the development of management and business plans, and Council reports.
- Conducts safety audits and prepares written reports.
- Supports and promotes the health and safety of employees and the general public in accordance with the Saskatchewan Employment Act, Saskatchewan Health Regulations and Standards , Occupational Health & Safety Regulations and the City of Saskatoon's administrative Occupational Health & Safety policies and departmental procedures. Maintains and monitors programs which affect the health and safety of employees and the general public.
- Provides managerial support in the absence of the Zoo Manager, as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Qualifications
- University degree in zoology, biology, animal science or related discipline.
- Four to six years’ progressively responsible experience in animal husbandry preferably in a CAZA/AZA/ZAA zoo, operant conditioning/animal training procedures specifically with positive reinforcement training and supervisory experience.
- Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver's Licence.
- Current driver’s abstract demonstrating a safe driving record.
- Possession of a valid, recognized Firearms Acquisition Certificate, training provided upon hire.
- Knowledge of current CAZA standards of animal care, facility upkeep and conservation programs.
- Knowledge of current literature, standards, trends and practices applicable to facility operation, program planning and customer service within a zoological setting.
- Knowledge of corporate policies and procedures, collective agreements, occupational health and safety legislation, Workers’ Compensation, preparation and control of budgets, and purchasing and tendering procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, including the ability to prepare and present reports.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, direct, co-ordinate, monitor and evaluate the work of staff.
- Demonstrated leadership skills to promote a positive and constructive working environment.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Councillors, assigned staff, co-workers and the public.
- Ability to evaluate program effectiveness and develop proposals for change of methods and procedures.
- Skill in the use of a computer using MS Outlook, Word, Excel, and Species 360/ZIMS

Weekly Hours: 36.67
Salary Range: $86,211.84 to $101,175.60 CAD
per annum (2022 rates)
