  Certified or Apprentice Saw Filer/ Benchperson

  The position of Certified or Apprentice Saw Filer/ Benchperson will be within our Galloway Lumber operation, located in Galloway, BC.

  Responsibilities

  • Maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing primary and secondary breakdown machine centers with regards to saw filing including guide alignments, lube systems, wheel grinds
  • Maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing filing room grinders and all shop related equipment
  • Benching, tensioning, sharpening, and re-tipping of circular saws
  • Follow all required safe work procedures
  • Measure and monitor product sizes to ensure accuracy and make necessary adjustments
  • Bench all types of circular saws - inspect saws for plumb, level and proper tension
  • Correct any saw plate defects by hammering or rolling the saws
  • Knife changes and sharpening on Head Rig slabber and Board Edger heads
  • Work with maintenance team to maintain and align components of circular saw machine centers – including head rig, gang edger, board edger, and trim saws
  • Maintain and sharpen debarker tips
  • Maintain the specified tooth geometry of circular saws by applying various tipping and sharpening methods
  • Maintain circular saw benching equipment, tipping and sharpening equipment and alignment tools and equipment
  • Use of power tools (grinders, tippers, levelers, tensioners and Babbitt pots) and various hand tools
  • Perform scheduled and as needed saw changes
  • Complete any other work that is typically performed by a circular Sawfiler in the lumber manufacturing industry
  
  

  Requirements/Qualifications

  • 2-5 years of experience as a Saw Filer or Saw Filer Apprentice, Benchperson preferred
  • Ability to work in a safe and efficient manner
  • Mechanically inclined
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment
  • Solid background in sawmilling
  • Knowledge of sharpening / maintenance of chipper and canter knives
  • Able to work in a dynamic production environment
  • Communicate clearly with supervisors, maintenance personnel and co-workers
  • Clear understanding of Metric and Imperial measure
  • Able to physically handle heavy materials safely and effectively
