The Opportunity

The Algonquins of Ontario (AOO) are looking to fill the critical role of Office Assistant. This position will have the unique and groundbreaking opportunity to support the Algonquin Negotiation Representative (ANRs) in their ongoing efforts to rebuild and revitalize the Algonquin Nation through the negotiation towards and implementation of a modern-day Treaty, while also working to enhance the Algonquin presence across the unceded AOO Settlement Area.

The Office Assistant will provide administrative, organizational, and procedural support for the day-to-day operations of the AOO. You will act as the first point of contact and provide general information to staff, Algonquin Negotiation Representatives, consultants, guests, and the public. Responsibilities include but are not limited to answering telephone inquiries, managing a high volume of inbound and outbound mail, providing support to meetings and events and storage and maintenance of physical and electronic documents.

About Us

The AOO are on a journey of survival, rebuilding, and self-sufficiency – a journey of reconciliation. This journey began nearly 250 years ago when the first Algonquin Petition was submitted to the Crown in 1772. Today, the AOO are comprised of the following ten Algonquin communities:

About You

You are an administrative professional who:

  • Has at least 1 year of relevant experience.
  • Is passionate about the survival, rebuilding, and self-sufficiency of all Algonquin communities.
  • Understands the detrimental and lasting effects of colonization on Indigenous people.
  • Has superior telephone manners and interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Has superior ability to positively interact with others using sensitivity, tact, diplomacy and professionalism.
  • Has strong organizational and time management skills
  • Has strong communication skills including listening, speaking and writing
  • Has a strong grasp of archival database software.
  • Has advanced skills in the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Access).
  • Is proficient with inputting and managing archival data and electronic filing systems.
  • Can adapt to new technology.
  • Can prioritize and manage conflicting demands.
  • Can take direction and implement procedures.
  • Can respond quickly in a dynamic, fast-paced, and changing environment.
  • Can work independently and in a team environment.
  • Is able to perform all functions in such a manner that ensures complete confidentiality of the AOO privacy entitlements.

Additional Requirements:

· Recognized post-secondary diploma (2 years) in Business Administration, Office Administration, or relevant experience.

· Advanced skills with the Microsoft Office suite.

· A valid G Class Driver’s License.

· Able to lift up to 20kg (44 lbs.) and comfortable performing physical work within the field.

· The successful candidate is expected to reside within the greater Ottawa Valley area considering that the AOO Consultation Office headquarters is in Pembroke Ontario.

· Ability to work from the AOO office located in Pembroke as required in compliance with the Travel Policy.
