JOB SUMMARY

The Water Production branches operate and maintain the City's two water purification plants and the corresponding East or West remote pumping stations, reservoirs and communal well systems.

As the Process Operator you are responsible for operating, monitoring, adjusting and troubleshooting various plant chemical processes for the purification of water at either of the City’s water purification plants to ensure compliance with all applicable water treatment regulations, policies, procedures and federal, provincial and City guidelines.

You are the Operator-In-Charge of either of the City’s water treatment chemical systems, in accordance with O. Reg. 128/04. You have primary responsibility for the identification, mitigation, management of process upsets and emergency situations associated with the plant’s chemical feed and control systems, and are responsible for reporting upsets and emergency situations to the Process Supervisor, in accordance with plant procedures. You also assist the Process Supervisor in the mitigation and management of emergency process and environmental situations in all other areas of the plant.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of 3 year community college diploma in Engineering Technology, preferably with emphasis in environmental, water treatment, chemical or biochemical technology

Minimum of 1 year of environmental, water treatment, industrial or chemical process related work experience in an industrial, production or laboratory environment

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES

Process Operator must possess and maintain Ontario MOE Class 1 Drinking Water Treatment Operator Certificate; Class 2 certificate is desirable

KNOWLEDGE

  • Basic knowledge of chemistry, physics, hydraulics and electrical devices
  • Basic knowledge of current provincial regulations pertaining to drinking water treatment
  • Basic knowledge of automated process measurement and control
  • Intermediate knowledge of water treatment processes and water treatment process equipment
  • Intermediate knowledge of mathematics, lab procedures and sampling techniques
  • Advanced knowledge of health and safety procedures, equipment and legislation
  • General knowledge of City of Ottawa Policies and Procedures, Drinking Water Services’ responsibilities, facilities and equipment
  • General knowledge of computer software applications typically used in an office environment
  • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers.

The terms “Basic”, “Intermediate” and “Advanced”, as noted above, refer to terms, scope and level of topic mastery, as defined by the MOE certification document entitled “Water Treatment Need to Know Guide”, most current edition. Applicants will be required to demonstrate their degree of knowledge/mastery, of the topics noted above, in general accordance with this document.
