Job description
Apply Digital is hybrid/remote-friendly. The preferred candidate should be based in Canada working in hours that align to EST or PST.
The Software Engineer Intern is a contributor towards the quality and timely completion of a project's technical deliverables. This is primarily an individual contributor role that focuses mainly on software engineering and it is a paid intern/co-op opportunity.
People holding the Software Engineer Intern title may have already specialized in a particular area of software development, such as front-end or back-end, but may still be deciding on where they would like to specialize - and this is totally fine! We're happy to help in this journey. They will be continuing to hone their craft while holding this title. Occasionally, a person holding this title may be asked to stretch into a different area of software development, but, for the most part, it is not expected that they will be required to perform these tasks frequently.
The Software Engineer Intern is primarily an individual contributor that can expect to spend about 85% of their time writing code. The remainder of that time will be spent participating in sprint rituals and providing support. They may be asked to provide specific guidance to more junior members of the team if they have specialized knowledge. It is expected that an SWE Intern will be able to complete low-difficulty tasks with some assistance and moderately-difficult tasks with a fair amount of supervision.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- The Software Engineer will be learning to provide documentation for the portions of code & specific functionality that was implemented by them so that the team (and future team members) understand how a specific module functions.
- The Software Engineer works to deliver functionality specified by the product manager
- The Software Engineer provides assistance to the QA team when testing specific functionality that may be hard to understand
- The Software Engineer contributes to an Agile delivery model, whereby the features offering the greatest business value are delivered to the client early in the project's development cycle.
- The Software Engineer is learning to understand the Scrum process. They are beginning to understand, attend and contribute to a project's Scrum rituals and ceremonies. They may not contribute as actively as senior members of the team but are expected to be active listeners.
- The Software Engineer is beginning to learn about craftsmanship. Code should be efficient, maintainable, tested, and properly documented. The Software Engineer will be continuing to hone their understanding of software development principles such as DRY and SOLID.
- The Software Engineer is responsible for following the decided-upon code branching model. They may not be as familiar with source control tools and may need guidance to handle more complex source control tasks
- The Software Engineer stays on top of the latest developments in their area of expertise
- The Software Engineer will be learning how to share actionable and productive feedback. They may be called upon to provide it to their manager so that it can be shared appropriately.
