Project/Unit Description
Work within the Specialized Management Branch at Robins AFB in order to:
- Become a technical expert on the system Software
- Oversee SW engineering product life-cycle including requirements, risk, and configuration management by applying DoD guidelines and principles.
- Ensure assigned SW products satisfy Operational Safety, Suitability, and Effectiveness (OSS&E) requirements.
- Support Lead Engineer with creating and sustaining key SW engineering processes and documentation detailed in the Systems Engineering Plan (SEP)
- Support Lead Engineer with creating and sustaining the system SW Configuration Baseline including a transition to the Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE)
- Oversee SW Block Cycle development including requirements definition, design reviews, CCB, testing and release.
- Provide technical expertise to oversee system SW modifications, obsolescence mitigation and other sustainment efforts.
- Define and sustain internal and external system SW interfaces.
- Track contractor SW development certifications to ensure compliance in accordance with DoD guidance.
- Review and approve system SW technical reports and documentation to ensure all requirements are satisfied.
- Provide Program Office oversight for contractor efforts supporting all system engineering areas (definition, requirements analysis, synthesis, systems analysis and implementation)
- Support Program contracting efforts to include market research, Statement of Work and Deliverable development, and other technical aspects of the procurement process.
- Review contractor technical deliverables and provide comments in accordance with Lead Engineer guidance.
Job Purpose
A Software Engineer designs, develops, and tests software; additionally manages software development teams, provides technical leadership, establishes software development lifecycle practices and processes. The Software Engineer is proficient in programming languages such as Java, C, C++, Ruby, Python, Scala, and Groovy. Requires extensive knowledge of programming languages, software development, computer operating systems, continuous integration, continuous delivery, DevOps, API development, container development, and distributed systems. Applies engineering principles to software creation, managing production releases of software, performing code reviews, merging feature development branches, and analyzing and triaging issues. Necessary skill areas: Programming and coding, fundamentals of computer science, design and architecture, algorithms and data structures, information analysis, debugging software, testing software, and working in development teams. Works with sponsors to curate requirements, define sprint work items, set priorities for work backlogs, and organize development teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Apply expertise in computing systems, software structure to software planning, requirements, and development. Base software structure and design on the recognized limitations of hardware platform.
- Develop and maintain kernel and user-level software and scripts.
- Create and analyze network protocols.
Additional Responsibilities
- Present technical data to stakeholders and sponsor community, in design reviews and technical interchange meetings
- Manage all technical aspects of product or system design including directing multiple resources for large scale products or system deployments.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Minimum Qualifications
- Active Secret Clearance
- Experience with systems engineering processes and methodologies applicable to complex systems.
- Bachelor’s degree with minimum 5 years relevant experience.
- Understanding of radar systems and modern SW development and sustainment practices
Preferred Qualifications
- Active Top Secret Clearance
- Master’s degree in relevant technical area.
- Experience writing test procedures and plans for complex and multi-faceted DOD systems, platforms, and environments.
Travel Requirements
10% - 25% travel
Education and Length of Experience

- 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field
- 3 years of related experience with a Masters’ degree in Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field
- 0 years of related experience with a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field
U.S. Citizenship Requirements
Due to our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be U.S. Citizens.
Clearance Type Required
Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
